  35 million potted poinsettia plants are sold in the U.S. every year, making them the most popular potted plant in the U.S. Poinsettias are actually a Mexican plant that flowers in the winter. Its U.S. name comes from the US Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, who introduced the flower in 1825.
