Flower Language Story Prompt (Daisy)

As I promised, I tried my hand at writing a little bit of prose based off of the flower language prompt I made. I’m not sure where I would want to go with this if I tried to make it a longer story, but the exercise was fun! I spun a wheel and number 7 is what I got. I decided to do this based on the Victorian side since I found the multiple meanings more interesting to write about. Next I’m going to try the Japanese side and see what I get. If anyone is interested in trying the prompt for themselves, there’s a link down below!

Victorian 7. Daisy – Innocence, Loyal love, I’ll never tell

No one knows who fathered my daughter; my greatest wish is that it stays that way.

I stand at the edge of Sunlight Meadow and watch as she frolics amongst the flowers. As she smiles into the sunlight, she looks so much like my beloved. A smile creeps upon my face, but my joy is bittersweet. While I see her smile and see her father, I have to hope that others see it and only see my little girl.

If anyone knew that my child had his blood flowing through her veins, they’d drain everything from her, just like they did him. And once they were done, once they drained every bit of vitality out of her and left her body a husk, she’d be laid on an altar and burned. They’d rejoice at her blessings while they murder her in cold blood.

I refused to let my child be forced down the same path as my beloved. While he would always be in my heart, I would make sure she stayed by my side.

My daughter is calling for me. She runs out of the flowers onto the soft grass toward me. Proudly, she brandishes a crown of bright blossoms, their yellow centers matching the sun and radiating white petals, and offers it to me.

I crouch down and allow her to place the crown on my head. Grateful, I embrace her, kissing the top of her head.

Oh, I’ll never tell. For the sake of my beloved, and the child we made together, I’ll never tell.
