All That I’ve Created 1: In The Beginning

Here’s a short story that I wrote back in 2015. It’s about a lonely goddess creating her own universe. I recently found it on my old Wattpad account and since I still quite like it, I decided to do a few edits and post it here.

“It’s so empty here.” I said.

I stood in the void. She waved her arms up and down but felt nothing. ‘Shouldn’t there be things here…..?’ I thought.

I let out another sigh as I looked around me again. I’ve been here for a really long time, or at least I think so, but now that I think about it, what is time? I guess it doesn’t matter right now. If nothing exists but me in the Void, who cares? ………….It’s so boring though……There’s no one to talk to and nothing to entertain myself with.

“Other entities already have their own universes. I’ve never encountered them but I do feel their existence. I wish I could talk to them, but they feel so far away. It’s too bad really. If I could talk to them then I wouldn’t be so bored…….and lonely. Maybe I should create my own universe, like them? Yeah, that’s what I should do! I’ll create a universe!” I exclaimed.

“I’ll create constellations, planets, suns, moons, and other stuff! But they’ll all still be empty…..”

I put my fist into the palm of my hand. “I’ll put people! And plants! And animals! Not just those but,” I gasped, “Forces and Elements! But not just one kind. I’ll put many kinds!” I jumped up and down in glee. “Dótis Zoís, you may not know what any of these are, but after you make them your boredom and loneliness will be over!”

And so I got to work. Out of the Void, I created something from nothing. The first thing I created was bright, almost blinding. It was different from the emptiness that surrounded me, I decided to call it Light. Though I didn’t know exactly what a person, animal, plant, or object was, instinct told me it didn’t fall under those categories, so I decided to call it a force. As Light was born, so was something else, with its opposite created to help define it, came Darkness. I looked at my first two creations and was proud. I decided that the first thing I would do was spread the darkness.

I cupped Darkness in my hands and slowly spread them, allowing Darkness to expand until it filled all the space around me. When this was done, I took Light and contemplated it. After a few moments of thought, I decided to use Light to make lanterns in the dark void.

‘Wait, what are lanterns?’ I thought to myself. After a moment, I shrugged and continued my work. ‘Oh well, I guess I’ll find out soon enough. Now to create a…..what’s the word? Oh yeah, planet!’

The element I made I called Earth, and from it I learned the meaning of hard and soft. Using it, I created a large sphere that would be a life-bearing planet when I was done with it. The second was Air, I couldn’t see it, but I knew it was there. When I moved the air between my hands and decided to call its movement wind.

‘Perhaps the life I create could breathe using this……..?’ I wondered. ‘Wait, I still don’t know what that is. Sigh….I guess the sooner I make everything the better.’

And so I continued. With Air, I made an atmosphere for the planet. Next, I made Water. As she touched it, she now understood the concept of cold and wetness. How much I was learning was beginning to amaze me. With the Water, I created oceans, rivers, and seas. Finally, I created Fire. This element fascinated me the most. It shared similar properties as Light, but was different somehow. I had just created it and hadn’t seen it interact with other elements but somehow I knew that Fire somehow felt….alive.

“Life……” I murmured as I gazed at the warm glowing light in my hands.

I was unfamiliar with that concept. I shrugged and added fire to the planet. I would never know what it meant unless I created it myself.

“I think I like fire, it’s so warm,” I thought.

With the main four elements put together, I began creating smaller things by combining them. I made clouds, mud, electricity, lava, and so on. When was done I looked at the planet I had made. I scrutinized every crevice. It had to be perfect for what I was going to make next. I finally nodded my head in satisfaction.

“Perfect. Now to make it. To make Life, whatever it is!”
